HeroZero format¶
What it is¶
Four players. One court. Three matchups.
Each matchup is a normal beach volleyball match, best of three.
The evening can end in only two kinds of result:
- One player has won all three matchups.
- One player has lost all three matchups.

Who plays with whom¶
There are exactly three ways to split four players into two teams of two. You play all three.
| Matchup | Blue team | Yellow team |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Anna and Ben | Cas and Dan |
| 2 | Anna and Cas | Ben and Dan |
| 3 | Anna and Dan | Ben and Cas |
So you partner each of the other three once, and you play against each of them twice.
Hero or Zero¶
Three matchups give six wins in total, because each one has two winners. That allows only two outcomes:
- Hero — one player wins all three. The other three win one each.
- Zero — one player loses all three. The other three win two each.
Every evening produces exactly one Hero or one Zero. It is always one of the two.
The order of the matchups¶
The app decides the order. It puts the most one-sided matchup first and the most even one last, so the best game is the last one.
Expected outcomes¶
Before the first matchup, the app shows each player's chance of becoming the Hero and of becoming the Zero. It also names the single most likely result.
Four players, each of whom can end as the Hero or as the Zero, make eight possible results. Exactly one of them happens, so the eight chances in the table add up to 100%.

The numbers come from the club ratings, or from the level you chose when you joined if the club has no rating for you yet. They are a prediction, not a judgement. A small chance still happens.
Entering a result¶
Tap the team that won. Any of the four players can do this, and so can the organizer.
Then press Next game. That opens the next matchup.
Fixing a mistake¶
Back returns to the previous matchup. The winner you entered is still selected, so you only change what was wrong.
When it ends¶
On the third matchup the button reads Finalize. Pressing it shows the result and ends the tournament. There are no buttons after that.
To correct something afterwards, the organizer reopens the tournament in the Lobby. The page comes back exactly where it was.
More than four players¶
Four people play. Someone who joins after that is in the tournament but not playing. The organizer can swap them in if one of the four has to leave.
An organizer who is not playing takes no place.
What this format does not have¶
- No Tournament Rank, and no moving up or down.
- No bench, because nobody sits out.
- No Batman and Robin roles.
- No scores. Only who won.
- No Me tab and no Standings tab. This format has a Lobby tab and a HeroZero tab, and the result is on the HeroZero tab.
Compared with Batman and Robin¶
| HeroZero | Batman and Robin | |
|---|---|---|
| Players | Exactly 4 | 4 or more |
| Courts | 1 | Several |
| Matchups | 3 | As many as you want |
| Ranking | None | Tournament Rank moves every round |
| Ends | After the third matchup | When the organizer stops |
Choosing the format¶
The organizer chooses the format in the Lobby, under Tournament format. It can be changed until the tournament starts, and is fixed after that.
